There are many recipes for using up stale bread. From Apple charlotte to stuffing to bread pudding to bread and butter pudding to bread sauce and soup to summer pudding – the list is endless. Even bread crumbs and croutons are made of stale bread. One of the best things, however, to do with stale bread is croque monsieur.
So, here is an easy recipe for croque monsieur!
One or two slices of day old bread (depending on how hungry you are)
Bechamel sauce (simple white sauce)
Preheat the oven to about 230 degrees C (or 450 F).
Place the slices of bread on a baking tray and smear them with a nice, thick smear of bechamel sauce. Place one slice of ham over the top and then sprinkle the grated cheese liberally over the ham.
Put in the oven for about 10 -15 minutes until the cheese is melty and getting brown.
Remove and eat – being careful not to burn yourself on the cheese!
Croque monsieur can be made and then frozen – ready to be pulled out when you need them for unexpected guests or when you are too tired to cook. Simply pop them in the oven and in 10 minutes or so they will be ready to eat! YUM!
