It feels like we announce news on a daily basis these days, there are simply so many exciting projects that we’re involved with. Maybe we should have our own broadcast channel? We could call it The Daily Bread and trumpet out the latest loaf lowdown.
The latest news to come out of Virtuous Bread’s HQ is our collaboration with The Urban Physic Garden, brainchild of talented landscape architect Heather Ring. This special summer project is a magical pop-up medicinal garden situated on a derelict site in Southwark. Doesn’t it sound bloomin’ beautiful? Wayward Plants, a collective of designers, artists and urban growers have designed and produced the garden and it will be open throughout the summer, starting from 11 June. There will be all sorts of cool events going on, from workshops, film screenings, ping pong skip, talks and artist projects.
Of course, Virtuous Bread’s travelling bread oven plays a part in this garden extravaganza.
We’ll be building our very own wood fired bread oven to hold focaccia, pizza and flatbread classes. Can you imagine how delicious this will taste? We’ll use herbs from the Urban Physic Gardens to flavour our bread and while we wait for the dough to rise, we’ll explore the area or simply relax around the oven. There’s an on-site cafe in a decommissioned ambulance managed by the Rambling Restaurant, so there will be extra fuel to keep you going if you can’t wait for your bread. The cafe will be serving up exciting menus, including edible herbs and flowers – I don’t think I’m the only one already salivating!
The classes cost £50 and for that you get four hours of tuition, along with plenty of good bread to bring home with you. The address is 100 Union Street, London, United Kingdom, SE1 ONL, close to Southwark or London Bridge tube stations. You can book your space or view the available dates below.
